Bible Quizzing: The Maybe Monsters
What is Bible Quizzing? This is a really good question.
We basically memorize chapters of the Bible, word for word, and then go to contests and are quizzed on our memorization. When we answer, we must answer word for word.
The fun thing about quizzing is what is called "jumping." Jumping is basically trying to be the first person to jump off your chair. If you ARE the first one, you are entitled to answer the question. However, if you jump before the quizmaster is done reading the question, you must first finish the question, and then answer it.
Now, this may not seem like fun because it is way different when you are actually doing it. Unless you try it, or watch it, you wouldn't really understand.
The team put together is quite interesting. First, you must start with a crazy coach - we found Matthew Nelson. Next, try to find an assistant coach who is a little more down to earth - we found Julie Lawrence. Then, a team needs to be put together in order to go to competitions. The six quizzers on the Maye Monsters team are Matt "Tuna" Wagner of Howard Lake, Marcus Wanha of Litchfield, Jon Wanha of Litchfield, Maia Coyle of Hutchinson, Sabrina Lawrence of Cokato, and Torie Hemingsen of Cokato.
Some of the team does real well with memorization, and then, some don't. We found out after our November 2007 meet that we really need to memorize all of our chapters before trying to quiz. It really makes quizzing worthwhile when you actually know answers to the questions.
One of our best moments in quizzing was during our first quiz of our first quiz meet. We were really nervous because we had only practiced with our team - never against another team before - so we were not sure what to expect. About halfway through the quiz, Maia quizzed out! In order to quiz out you need to answer five questions correctly. It seems kind of easy, but it isn't - at least not for our team. This was huge. We were really excited and glad for her. It turns out this has been our only quiz out.
The basic anatomy of a quiz meet is as follows: we begin with praise and worship, then go to our match, where we begin with prayer and a few practice jumps. Halfway through the day is "half time" when we meet back in the sanctuary (or large meeting area if not in a church) for more praise and worship, and get to know other people from other teams.
Though we really enjoy the time of fellowship with other youth our age, the most favorite time is when we go out to eat afterwards. Those restaurants we visit probably do not have the same affection for us. This is a time that our poor, tired brains are turned off and we become loud and obnoxious. To those restaurants, we do apologize, and really do appreciate their hospitality.
Quizzing really is enjoyable - it is a lot of fun, and it also is a great way to learn the Bible.
If you are not in quizzing now, you really should ask Matt Nelson how to join, because it is a blast, AND you get a cool monster nickname. |
